What about cabinet refacing?

There are times when we will get a call from a client who wants to upgrade their kitchen but the budget is not enough to give the client the kitchen of their dreams. If a client is happy with the footprint of their kitchen because it fits the client's criteria for functionality and the floors will remain the same, we will quite often than not suggest the option of refacing their cabinets.

So, what is cabinet refacing exactly? Cabinet refacing is covering the exposed frames and sides of your cabinets with a thin veneer of real wood or plastic laminate or repainting the existing cabinets. Doors and drawer fronts are replaced to match or complement the new veneer or freshly painted cabinets. Replacing the hinges, knobs/pulls will complete the new look creating a transformed kitchen. However, we like to take it a step further, when the budget allows, by adding new countertops and backsplashes, sometimes even new appliances. Here is an example of a kitchen transformed with cabinet refacing.

Below is the before picture.

Before Cabinet Refacing

In this case, our client wanted a more streamlined modern look. They wanted to do away with the cathedral recessed panel type upper wall cabinet doors and go to a shaker style white cabinet with clean lines and flat drawer headers. We added quartzite countertops, glass subway and decorative tile, new undermount sink, under cabinet lighting and new hardware and knobs. Wow, what a transformation!

What is the price difference? Well of course every kitchen is different because of size and of course the finish. But usually, refacing your cabinets will cut your budget dramatically, sometimes even half the cost of gutting and replacing with new cabinets. So before you decide to gut that dated kitchen or pass on a kitchen remodel due to budget restraints, remember there is the option of kitchen cabinet refacing.
